    THE HEAD QUARTERS NEWSPAPER
    FREDERICTON

    September, 1893

    Mr Editor,

I notice that the Gleaner has turned it's attention of late to the Fire Department and as usual it's articles misrepresent the facts. If the Gleaner man got his report from someone else, he was badly "stuffed". If he were there himself, he deliberately lied.

The Gleaner says "When the hose was attached to the hydrant at the corner of St John and Charlotte Streets, and the cart run out, it transpired that there was only hose enough to reach the corner of the building, not enough to even get near the door."

The fact is that No. 4's pipemen when standing in front of the door had 100 feet of slack hose with which they could easily get on the roof and have lots of hose for moving around. If more hose were needed, No. 2 cart with 500' stood along side the hydrant, but probably the Gleaner man couldn't see a thing like No. 2 cart on account of the great crowd "..fully 1000" that he saw there (there were less than 100 including firemen).

If the Fire Committee, the Gleaner, or anyone else wants proof, it can be readily furnished.
