![]() Chamber PotWhen entering a home and the pipe was red and burning inside we often asked for a pail of water and some old rags which when wetted and placed on the pipe would cool it down very nicely. On a cold winter evening Platoon 1, With then Captain James Hartt in command, received a call to a large apartment house at the corner of King and Carleton Streets; Pipe and chimney Fire. One of the crew remarked to Captain Hartt that a pail of water was necessary and the Captain noticing one by a bed in the room where the pipe was very red, remarked here is a pail, and used it on the not pipe. It wasn't water! The chemical reaction drove everyone out of the room, and the pumper driver wondered why everyone was coming out for air so fast. The Deputy Chief had also arrived on the scene at this time.
One could say, lesson learned always bring in a pump tank and never trust a bucket of liquid that may be under someone's bed.
