Runaway Coffins

Bill and Doll were the last fire horses for the City of Fredericton. Right after they were retired in 1938, Frank Toner bought Doll, as he had the contract to haul coffins from the freight station to McAdam's Funeral Home which used to be on King Street.

Now, it must be remembered that Doll had a reputation for being a bit rambunctious, and the much more experienced Bill had to keep her in line from time to time.

One fine day, Mr. Toner and Doll were heading down King street with an overload of coffins (empty, thank goodness), and the fire alarm went off. So did Doll, scattering coffins the length of King Street.

As per nephew Peter... "Frank got a fair price for her".
