History of Marysville Fire Protection

In 1870, a wooden bridge was erected near the site of the current bridge. In 1886, the town of Marysville was created by an act of the legislature. It was named after Boss Gibson's wife Mary.

Cotton Mill

The Marysville Cotton Mill was first opened in 1885. It was the center of industry for the community. Marysville had it's first election on January 24, 1887 and was incorporated on April 2nd of that same year. The first mayor was Alexander Gibson Sr. (term 1887-1908).

Fire protection was provided by the Cotton Mill. Men were designated to respond from the mill in the event of a fire. Originally, horses pulled the fire equipment. Eventually, they were replaced by motorized vehicles.

In 1947 a 50,000 gallon water tank was purchased from Chipman, NB to start the town waterworks and in 1947-48, Water & Sewage services along with Fire Hydrants were installed.

Canadian Cottons Ltd - Marysville, NB Prior to 1954, fire protection and street lighting was under the control of the cotton mill. In 1954, the Cotton Mill closed. The town bought the fire truck from the Mill for $12,000. Storage, driver & Fire Chief on 24 hour call was Robert Watts and the firemen were paid-on-call. The truck was kept at Chief Watts' service station until the new fire station was built in 1968 on Harrison Court at a cost of $45,000.

In 1973, Marysville became part of Fredericton and the fire station became known as "Station Five".
